Paper Stacking

Kiwi:

Invented:

My invented design originated from squares. After altering a square into 2 separate diamonds, my shape began to form into the inverted dice that it may appear to be. It takes on different forms based on the individual's viewpoint.

Fictitious Dishes

This project branched from the story, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula L. LeGuin. The platter symbolizes the child's misery served upon a silver platter from his/her peers so that their happiness can be satisfied. There is a spoon representing the outside world and the various colors that appeared in their festivals. The part of the spoon that would enter the mouth is black to show that all of the color of the outside world is all but black for the child who has never left the cellar. There are remnants of corn mean and grease mingling with the beard of the old man enjoying the festival outside with crumbs in his beard. Finally the bowl with the smelly mop bristles emerging show the grotesque nature of the child's living environment.

Wrapped Human Body

  • What will you be wrapped with? May use more than one material. All materials must be approved by me.

  • An elegant, maybe sheer, sheet

  • How are the colors and textures of the materials you chose significant?

  • Choosing white to expose the purity of the female body as it is exposed to the world around her. The sheet itself signifies sex in its most obvious sense- seen in the bedroom.

  • How is the material significant? Are you taking the materials out of it's original context?  Or using materials because of associations?

  • The material is significant because it relates to the bedroom where the female figure can be seen underneath. I want to drape more sheets around the figure so the eye can get lost following the form, or not following the form.

  •  How will you be wrapped? Loosely? Systematically? Combination?

  • Loosely in some places, but tighter around the hips, chest, and neck.

  • Pose? Will viewer be able to recognize human form? Or will body blend in, be camouflaged in environment?

  • Lying down in a somewhat like the pose seen in Venus of Urbino.

  • Where will photo be taken in the photo studio?  If so, why are you choosing to eliminate info and focus on the wrapped body? Will the wrapped body be standing? sitting? crouched? lying down? curled up? limbs extended? back to viewer

  • Originally I was thinking photo studio, but I may choose my own bedroom to drape the sheets and have the figure lie in front.

  • If not shooting in photo studio, what site have you chosen?  Why? How will the wrapped body interact and/or be part of the chosen environment? Will the wrapped body be standing? sitting? crouched? lying down? curled up? limbs extended?

  • Either in photo studio or bedroom. The body will seem natural as it lies amongst the sheets draped around her.

  • Will you include any props?  If so, what will you include, how will you use and why are you using?

  • No props other than the extra sheets!

  • Are you choosing to leave some areas exposed (this would be 5%)?  If so, state what body parts you selected and why.

  • Half of the face, specifically the eye will be exposed. Her form can be viewed by the world around her but she views the world around her from her own perspective

  • Model: Caroline Brady

Wrapping the model with wet sheets symbolizes sensuality of the female body. She's positioned to reveal her femininity as well and expose her body as it is perceived by the rest of the world. Leaving her head unwrapped was not only for her own safety but to show her awareness of how she is perceived and how the senses play such a role in sexuality.

    Soap Carving

    Duck Soap Carving
    -In Progress-

    Alterations:
    1) Subtraction: In microwave, the head of the duck fell off
     top

    side

    2) Subtraction: Washed body with soap in shower

    3) Addition: Baked in the oven, became bloated

    4) Addition: Color

    5) Subtraction: Throwing the duck off the roof

    6) Subtraction: Left in sun

    7) Subtraction: Cut apart, some pieces removed entirely

    8) Addition: Wire added to connect the pieces

The original soap carving was an attempt at re-creating the duck figurine. The modifications that took place were a string of random thoughts and I took each step as the previous one ended. Each thought was a branch off of earlier changes.

On Longing by Susan Stewart Visual/Auditory Responses

    On Longing by Susan Stewart

    Visual and Auditory Responses

    1) "The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale".
    • The comparison between the heigh and size of the live girl to the dolls she stands with give the viewer an idea of the true scale of the dolls. Most of us can imagine an estimated height of the young girl because we've witnessed our own selves at that height and have seen children in daily life who resemble the height of the girl as well. We use our knowledge of human form and size to understand the scale of the dolls she holds. This allows the viewer to put scale into perspective using the body as the primary mode of understanding.

    2) "The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental and the three-dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body".
    • Choosing the Empire State Building necklace felt slightly cliche, but after some thought, I realized it entire embodied the above statement. By wearing the necklace, a person may feel entirely tied to a place (NYC) that once meant a great deal to them. This allows for a person to be "enveloped" by the miniature which hangs from their necklace.

    3) "Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss".
    • Sonny and Cher are a prime example of nostalgia sustained from loss. Not only is their music missed by society, but their presence together is also missed. Viewing their performance via Youtube, one grows to feel nostalgic as their passions for each other and music pulsate off the screen. The knowledge of the death of Sonny evokes a somber emotion reminiscent of nostalgia as one glances upon a happy memory of the couple together.

    4) "To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy".
    • My own collection of shark's teeth is a trophy and series of specimens within itself. They are exotic to me because being from New Jersey, I never found shark's teeth growing up as a child and for majority of my teenage life. After moving to Florida, my shark's teeth became my own souvenir and personal trophy of living in this new place.

    5) "The place of origin must remain unavailable in order for desire to be generated".

    • The most mystical place in my mind are the great depths of the sea. It takes time, practice, and knowledge to be given the opportunity to deep sea dive which makes this place such a mystery to me. My desire of one day witnessing for myself is held strong because of the constant curiosity of the unknown depths of the ocean.

    Miniatures:

    To scale:

The water fountain was fun to recreate. It was difficult getting the proportions exactly to scale, but with a few slight modifications, I feel as if the final reconstruction does the original fountain justice.
